IBM is reportedly laying off thousands of U.S. employees and moving them to India. A report by The Register has stated that it spoke to employees who were asked to train Indian employees on their job role after being told they would soon have to leave.

According to the outlet, IBM has also listed 173 open positions since January this year with 2,946 openings available since November last year.

Some of the employees who were laid off and asked for an internal transfer were told that hiring was just taking place in India.

The source also said that employees from quality assurance teams and cloud computing were also fired and replaced with employees from India who didn’t have specialised training in the roles.

Layoffs have been reported across Raleigh, New York City, North Carolina, Dallas, Texas and California but the exact number of people who have been affected is still under wraps.

Recently, as tech firms continue cost cutting, hiring has continued in India. A month ago, it was reported that Meta despite announcing it would be firing 5% of its workforce for being “low performers” was expanding hiring in the country.

Last year, Google also said they will be moving some of its core unit jobs to India and Mexico from the U.S.
