Japanese investment firm Mizuho Securities says Apple is still finalising the iPhone Fold’s design and hasn’t locked in specs for several key components, especially the hinge. “It is not easy to mass-produce a foldable phone in Q3 2026 and release it in September,” the firm noted. While a 2026 launch isn’t completely off the table, analysts warn that production could fall 5–7 million units short of earlier estimates if Apple tries to meet that timeline.
Why the iPhone Fold Is Delayed?
The iPhone Fold’s delay comes down to one key challenge: the hinge. Foldable phones aren’t like regular smartphones they need hinges that can endure thousands of folds without affecting performance. Apple seems to be taking its time, prioritising durability and reliability over a rushed launch.
Foldables are notoriously tricky to produce at scale. Even small design tweaks or component changes can throw off production schedules. While Samsung and other brands have been shipping foldables for years, Apple is moving cautiously, aiming to deliver a device that meets its own high standards.
Analysts at Mizuho Securities also point out that other hardware specifications haven’t been finalised yet, adding another layer of complexity. So the delay isn’t just about the hinge it reflects the broader challenge of bringing a first-generation foldable iPhone to market that lives up to Apple’s expectations.

Even with the launch pushed to 2027, a few details about the iPhone Fold have surfaced. The outer display is expected to measure 5.38 inches diagonally, with the inner screen spanning 7.58 inches slightly smaller than earlier rumours of 5.49 and 7.76 inches. Folded, the device will be close in size to the discontinued iPhone mini (5.4-inch screen), while the inner display will become the largest ever on an iPhone.To handle the dual-screen setup, Apple is reportedly developing a custom A20 Pro chipset, designed for multitasking, split-screen use, and energy efficiency. Early reports also point to a 5,000–5,500 mAh battery, bigger than the iPhone 17 Pro Max, to keep the larger display running through the day.If the iPhone Fold launches with the iPhone 18 in 2027, production may still be limited due to the challenges of foldable devices.
