Unified Payments Interface (UPI) services experienced a major nationwide disruption on Thursday due to internal technical issues at a few participating banks, according to a statement from the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI).

“We regret inconvenience on intermittent UPI connectivity issues as few of the banks were having some internal technical problems. Our systems have been working fine and we have worked with these banks to ensure quick resolution,” said NPCI .

The outage led to widespread transaction failures, with many users unable to complete payments, as reported by ET.

According to Downdetector, a platform that monitors service outages, 61% of users reported difficulties in making payments, 30% were unable to transfer funds, and 9% faced issues accessing their UPI apps. Nearly 200 users reported problems during the disruption.

Despite this temporary setback, UPI continues to show strong growth. In July, UPI transactions reached an all-time high of 19.47 billion, according to NPCI data.

The total transaction value stood at Rs 25.08 lakh crore, the second highest on record after Rs 25.14 lakh crore in May. In comparison, June recorded 18.39 billion transactions valued at Rs 24.03 lakh crore, which was slightly lower than May’s 18.67 billion.
